How a BlogHer ’10 Conference Bag Changed the Lives of Women in India

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 by Paula Drum, General Manager
InLearn about the women of Freeset less than a month, I’ll be packing my bags and making last minute preparations for BlogHer ’10 in New York City. In case you’re not familiar with the event, BlogHer is the world’s largest conference for women in social media. This year’s event takes place August 6 – 7 and is shaping up to be the biggest in BlogHer’s history.

Gettington.com has the privilege of being this year’s BlogHer conference bag sponsor.   We are very excited about this opportunity because it gives us and BlogHer the opportunity to make all the conferences attendees part of the Freeset story.

Freeset is a fair trade business offering employment to women trapped in Kolkata's sex trade.  In this area of India alone, upwards of 10,000 women are forced to prostitution either through trafficking or poverty.  Freeset works to provide these women with new job skills and empowerment to obtain freedom from an occupation that was chosen for them. Freeset focuses on providing choices for these women by teaching them to sew jute bags for the export market.

Gettington.com Freset BagGettington.com has been supporting Freeset since our launch almost a year ago.  Our first “goodie” in our Goodie BagTM was a free Gettington Freeset bag.  We provided a summer version of the bag this year as a free gift for placing an order and also made it available for sale directly from our website.  And now in partnership with BlogHer, we are bringing the Freeset bag to the BlogHer ’10 conference.  By purchasing these bags from Freeset we are enabling the mission of freedom for these women.  By receiving a Gettington.com Freeset bag you are directly participating in a woman's journey to freedom.

If you plan on attending BlogHer ’10, you’ll receive this bag, which will no doubt have some great items inside, but giving the women of Kolkata an opportunity to become free from sex trade is a very meaningful gift.

Gettington will be situated at booth 1800 and would love for you to stop by and show your support for the women of Freeset. We’ll be setting up an area for you to share your thoughts and words of encouragement by creating a scrapbook that will be presented to the Freeset women or leave a comment here. The ladies are very excited and proud of their work – they especially enjoy receiving feedback from those that use their products – so don’t be shy!

Not making it to BlogHer ’10 this year but still would like to participate in the FreeSet story?  We’re going to pick 20 commenters to receive the Gettington.com Freeset Summer bag for showing their support for Freeset.  Each one of the summer bags are made with recycled Sari material that is handstitched to each side.  No two bags are alike!

Good luck and we look forward to sharing your comments with the women behind the BlogHer ’10 conference bag!

I'll be at BlogHer and I look forward to stopping by your booth. Last semester I wrote my final on women who's lives have changed due to fair trade. Empowering women...it's incredible. I look forward to passing along my words of encouragement to these ladies! Thank you for the opportunity!

These bags look great! I would definitely use it at the grocery store to save plastic or paper bags. Useful and a good cause too!

I absolutely love that you have a story to tell about your swag and that you put so much though into it. I love women helping women, and on top of that they are BEAUTIFUL!!! Huge supporter of Kiva and other micro-finance and also love women who lift themselves up this way with or without the help of others. Really special people on both sides. I would love to talk about this on my blog too if I win! Amazing that women can sew bags and that can free them from the horror of prostitution. So simple and amazing. Thanks again. Greta

What a fantastic project! I love to support free trade businesses, and the concept of giving these women the skills and support to take their lives in a new direction is wonderful.

Free bag/swag aside - this is an amazing initiative!! Firstly, it's women supporting other women which is fantastic to see. Beyond that, it's one country supporting another. How quickly we forget that men, women and children all over the world are not granted the same rights we are given from birth, and sadly, some never will. Instilling faith and confidence in these women by providing them with viable employment opportunities is a step in the right direction. Great job Gettington!!

This is the kind of thing that thrills me; having been to India and witnessed the poverty and heartbreak, I'm so thankful for initiatives like this that changes women's lives. Thank you for having a beautiful social conscience. It matters! www.pensieve.me

I won't be at the BlogHer ’10 conference this year so I won't have a chance to see the Freeset bag in person. It looks wonderful in the photos on this blog, especially the recycled Sari material that is stitched to each bag. I love the idea of women supporting women, but more than that, I love the idea of people supporting people. What a great cause. Kudos!
